it occurred to me recently that the narrator of the song was somehow "modified" by the kid who really knows his shit... hence the "funny little hum" and his complete acceptance of being dumped by his girlfriend.
I also liked someone else's interpretation that the narrator is actually a phone or computer or some other gadget that is being replaced... a "Toy Story" of sorts.
