Today, this is my favorite song and Katy Lied is my favorite album. From the exquisite chord progression to the pathos of the lyrics to the intensity of Donald's voice, it is a perfect song. And while Phil Woods was never my favorite saxophonist (as Dexter Gordon used to pronounce it..."saxOFFonist"), his solo is perhaps the second greatest in the Steely Dan canon. (We all know what is number one.)
I've been listening to this song for almost 40 years. Pretty scary...(also scary: Donald screaming on the fade-out. I can still remember the first time I noticed this, sitting around with friends, packing the bong, cranking the stereo..."what the hell was THAT?")....

The sort of song that charactarises what is unique about the Dan.

it was a total thrill to hear it live in NYC last time out. I'm glad Donald relented and finally did it... i forget the reasons he gave for not playing it for so long but i believe too hard to sing and unsatisfied with the "arc of the story" were mentioned.

Wish I'd been at that show...
I can believe it's difficult to sing. (I don't think I've ever heard a vocal cover of a SD song where the singer gets close to the way Fagen does it.) It's probably even harder for him now that he's older. But the story seems perfect to me...
Off to Youtube to see if anyone has posted the live version!

I, for one, find it very hard to pick "the one". Most people usually list among their faves the likes of Carlton's KC, Shorter's and/or Gadd's Aja, Dias's DIA, Graydon's Peg, Brecker's Maxine..., the greatness of which cannot be denied. Some of my OTHER favourites, in no particular order, and for different reasons, include: Feldman's Black Cow Christlieb's Deacon Blues, FM Walt's FM (solo/outro, his best tone/phrasing ever IMHO) Carlton's New Frontier (solo/outro) Walt's Black Friday (when at his best, this guy was soooo good) Krantz's Bright Nightgown Don/Walt's Godwhacker (maybe the only instance of D/W sharing solo duties? How nicely this flows...) ...and the one that brings tears to my eyes every time: Dean Parks' Upside Looking Down. Simple, magic, tasteful. I know there's so much more, so let this be "part one". Happy New Year to you all!

if i had to pick one quintessential solo it would be Deacon Blues. if i had to pick one guitar solo it would be Peg. if i had to pick my personal favorite it would be Rikki. or YGT II. or Bodhisattva. or Green Earrings. i can keep going and going...
my favorite live solo has got to be Ari Ambrose on Black Cow from the '96 Manassas show. just phenomenal. my favorite live solo that i witnessed personally would probably be Wayne Krantz on Goodbye Look back in '06.
Walter has certainly played his fair share of perfect solos. Don and Walt also traded breaks on Green Book.

You're right about D/W trading solos on Green Book (I pointed it out myself on youtube, I had forgotten), and it's a lovely exchange of short statements that's also among my favourite solos. Still surprised they haven't tried that more often. The solos you point out are all great. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to experience any of them live. Oh well, there may be hope if they decide to cross the pond one last time... I'll go check out Ambrose's solo right away, must be somewhere on youtube. Cheers!
